There is nothing better than having a good deep night's sleep and wake up feeling refreshed the next day. Your body is regenerated, your mental faculties are alert, and you are ready to conquer the world. Sleep is critical to a healthy life. If you don't get enough good quality sleep, everything you do is affected. Your creativity, your productivity, your health, and your mental well-being, are all affected.
For me personally, I don't like sleeping. I wish I did, but I don't. Not only is sleep a difficult task for me, but it is also a difficult subject. It's not that I don't appreciate all the benefits that I get from regenerating, but the act of falling asleep and waking up, as well as the dreaming part, are what I have issues with. And that pretty much sums up the sections of sleep, doesn't it?
You might wonder why I would put this section on my website if I have problems with it. The answer to that is, that I recognize the importance of sleep, and that it's all connected. Inspiration, meditation, affirmation, they're all connected to a more peaceful life, which contributes to a peaceful mind, which helps you sleep better. And a better sleep allows for the next day of this healthy cycle to continue.
I have improved greatly, but it is an ongoing battle. You see, as a child, and even now on occasion, I suffer from sleep paralysis. As an adult, although it can be quite alarming, I understand what it is when it's happening, and I know that it will pass. But as a child, I didn't know what was was going on when the sleep demon visited.
Sleep paralysis? Sleep demon? Sounds like something from a science fiction movie, but trust me, it is all very real. Sleep paralysis can happen as you fall asleep and as you wake up, and it is exactly what it sounds like. You are paralyzed, unable to move or speak, or even open your eyes, but you are aware of your surroundings. The sleep demon is a horrible hallucination of a creepy creature that you might see while you are paralyzed.
When I was little, the sleep demon was all too real. This phenomenon happened so often that I started incorporating him in my nightmares. Between my intense childhood and the sleeping disorder, my nightmares were quite horrific. To help you appreciate what it was like from my point of view as a child, please read this excerpt from my memoir. **Content warning: creepy, violence, weapons, blood
So how did I get from that scared little girl that would wake up under her bed to where I am now? It wasn't easy. Admittedly, I'm still not a huge fan of sleeping, but I have come so very far. I have to consciously work hard at it. The more peaceful and serene I can be an hour or two before sleep, the better. I play peaceful music or ocean waves to help me fall asleep and the music continues to play until morning. That way if I wake in the night, I am instantly aware of my surroundings and do not experience any fear.
Whether or not you've had experiences like mine with nightmares, paralysis, and sleep demons, more often than not, you have probably wished for a better night's sleep, or that it was longer. If you are looking for ways to improve your sleep, these links might be able to help.

Remember, it's all connected to your well-being. The better you feel about yourself, the more relaxed you will be, and the better you will sleep.
Rest well, my friend. Rest well.
